$B!!(BIn the Physics Major, students will begin from the basics of modern physics and proceed to the most advanced fields of physics. Natural phenomena that you will be studying range from elementary particles of $B#1(B0-33cm in the microscopic world, to the vast universe at 1028cm. As the scale of length changes, nature presents different rules. Our understanding of natural science can be organized as theories, by the use of mathematics. Also remember that theories must always be examined through experiments. These experiments, performed with the use of the most advanced scientific technology, can bring forth great discoveries surpassing the imagination of humankind, and help us to reach a better understanding of physical phenomena. $B!!(B

$B!!(BTheory and experiment are two methods that physics research has been based on, since the time of Galileo and Newton. Meanwhile, the recent progress in semi-conductor technology has led to the significant improvement of computer processing power. This enables us to use computers actively in natural science research. In order to understand physics today, you cannot do without knowledge of physics, experiments, and computers. $B!!(B

Elementary particles and supercomputers
The Computational Physics by Parallel Computer System (CP-PACS) at the  Center for Computational Physics of the University of Tsukuba, is uncovering the world of particles. Above, the computer system is shown with the cover panels removed (below), along with an article on the achievements of the CP-PACS (March 2, 1998; Asahi Shimbun).

Super-massive black hole
Observations of very luminous water-vapor maser emitted from the center of the spiral galaxy M106 (red color of the optical image), with a big radio interferometer (VLBA), have discovered a black hole whose mass is 39 million times as large as the solar mass.

$B!!(BPhysics, as you can see, spreads across a range of areas, and requires knowledge in mathematics, experiments, and computers. As you study the various themes and methods of physics, it is important to constantly have a firm grasp on how the themes relate to each other. It will be helpful to set up a well-organized study plan for yourself in order to learn these subjects efficiently. We have drastically reformed the curriculum so that students can see what is coming next when they are studying a specific subject. Our students have been pursing their studies based on this new curriculum since 1999.
