Fields of Research

There are about 50 researchers of mathematics at the University of Tsukuba, active in four major fields of research:

Algebra
(Group theory, ring theory, algebraic geometry, number theory)
Geometry
(Differential geometry、topology)

Analysis
(Functional analysis, partial differential equation theory, probability theory, algebraic analysis)
Information Science
(Mathematical logic, mathematical statistics, theoretical computer science, computational mathematics)

These researchers are involved in some of the most advanced mathematical research projects in the world. We receive many undergraduate and graduate students from abroad, as well as renowned international mathematicians. Project themes vary and are wide-ranging. We cannot discuss them in detail here, but please look at the names of faculty and their projects for more information. You will feel the liveliness of one the most advanced and dynamic research environments for modern mathematics.

Tsukuba Journal of Mathematics

This research journal is edited and published by the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Tsukuba, with a history of 70 years dating back to the days of its predecessor: the Science Reports of the Tokyo Bunrika Daigaku, Sect. A (1930-1953), and the Science Reports of the Tokyo Kyouiku Daigaku, Sect. A (1954-1977). It is published twice a year, with research reports in English contributed by leading mathematicians in Japan and around the world. There are exchanges with major international mathematics journals, and is highly regarded around the world.

Computer Room

Workstations and personal computers are available in the computer room, not only for faculty and graduate students, but also for undergraduates working on their graduation research projects. Experiencing actual operations leads to a broader understanding and familiarity with computers. E-mail and the Internet are also used to exchange information with researchers overseas.

Mathematics Major Break Room

All students of the Mathematics Major are free to use this common room. You will see students gathering at lunch and between lectures, discussing mathematics and student life in general over a cup of coffee. When you have a problem in your studies, or in anything else, you may find a good solution by visiting the break room. The relaxed atmosphere allows students from different years to get together and share ideas.
